The Baillie
Like your local should be.
The Baillie has been a bar since the 1870s.
“There is no music, no fruit machines and no juke box. Banter and debate are encouraged”
The Bailie bar is a cracking and well loved traditional pub located on St Stephen Street in Stockbridge.
It’s a cosy, basement space, with a red ceiling and black walls covered with an eclectic mix of old prints and photos. There is an island bar immediately as you enter with plenty of bar stools to perch on, with a larger seating area to the rear that is a bit more suited to dining. There is also a snug corner that always has a blazing open fire on the go, in the colder months, and which is one of the prime spots to bag on a chilly day. Outside there is a small seating area which is popular when the sun decides to shine.
It has no pretensions of ‘gastro-pubbiness’, but serves up good, honest, traditional pub grub. There is a great choice of proper comfort food including burgers, beer-battered fish and chips, nachos, steaks, etc. with a few veggie options as well.
There is no piped music, jukebox or fruit machines, with the emphasis on good conversation and banter. There is a very popular quiz on Tuesdays and live music most Fridays. There are a couple of TVs which are only switched on for particular football and rugby matches and will generally have the sound off as well.
